the end of my trip is closing in fast. Tomorrow I start the last stage of the trip, Lima city. First of all i want to thank everybody for the kind reactions regarding my birthday.Apperently i have not been forgotten yet :).
On the 24 i flew to an airport in Juliaca, near Puno. The travel organisation was waiting with a bus and brought me to my hotel. The next morning i was taken to see the floating islands of the Uru´s. They are a people dating pre-inca. They live on islands that they create themselves, using tortura reat. They make bases of the roots of the tortura and put the reat on top to make it softer. They also eat tortura, make their houses from it, and build it into boats.
We were shown an island where 5 families live. They showed us how to cook on an island, where they sleep and how they make a living. Obviously tourism , but also fishing and making handicraft provides (part) of their livelyhood. We went for a ride on a tortura boat, which was very nice.
After the boatride we were taken back to shore.
In the afternoon, we were taken to a pre-inca grave yard named Sillustani. The surroundings, near a lake and a Peninsula were breath taking. I walked slightly ahead of the group and waiting for them, al i could hear were animal sounds. Amazing! It turned out that the buriel ground was used for pre-Inca and Inca buriels. It was interesting to see the difference in building style.
The next day started early. At 06.30 i was picked up atmy hotel to visit Copacabana and the Isla del Sol in Lake Titicaca. It is believed that the Inca´s landed on Isla Del sol Before they picked Cosco as their centre point.
It was a great day. The weather was nice and the tour was very interesting. We were shown the church in Copacana, which is famous for the ¨black Madonna¨. It is not actually black, but dark in order to resemble the local population. People come from all over south America to pray to this Madonna and also to baptise their car.
In the afternoon we were put on a boat to take us to the Isla Del Sol. It is the biggest island in Lake Titicaca and has several ruins. They were nice to see. The tour operator has an exhibition centre on the island, where they show you a botanical garden with all the different herbes they use for medicinal reasons. There is also a ¨Shaman¨who performed a thanking ritual on our behalf for Pachamama (Mother Earth). It was interesting to see the ritual.
There is also a small museum where they explain the different cultures and exhibit mummy´s and traditional clothing.
To top it all off, we were taken on a trip on a tortura boat. I got to wear the traditional clothing of the rowers and had to assist them. That was a fun experience.
Tomorrow at 12.30 i am being picked up to go to Lima.
I will report again from there.
Till then, take care!!
Philip
